De-Stress With A Mango & Saffron Smoothie


The menopause, and period before it (peri-menopause), can alter the way we feel and experience stress and can bring on feelings of depression, anxiety, isolation and overwhelm.

Why is stress so much more stressful during the menopause?

Adrenal glands are responsible for producing two hormones when under stress, called cortisol and adrenaline. Our bodies are much better at coping with stress before the menopause because we have optimal levels of progesterone. Once those levels start to lower during the perimenopause stage, the cortisol buffering effect weakens. High cortisol levels can lead to insomnia, low sex drive, food cravings, weight gain, low moods, low energy and frequent colds.

Lifestyle

As difficult as this season is it's an ideal time to reflect on our lifestyles and see what might be contributing to stress. Even if we are facing situations outside of our control we can control our responses or learn a few relaxation techniques to help us stay calm and grounded. Exercise is also helpful but if the body is too stressed and tense it can increase the risk of injury. A great alternative would be to find a relaxing walk in the countryside.

Nutrition

When our bodies are stressed free-radical formation increases. Eating foods high in vitamin A, C and E can help the body combat free radical formation.

So, with this in mind I decided it would be a great idea to make a midlife beauty smoothie that contains some of the vitamins and minerals known to nourish skin and counter the effects of stress.

Mango and banana both contain a compound called Silica, which plays an important role in collagen synthesis, bone and teeth health and maintaining the structural integrity of the hair and skin.

Health Benefits

Mango is also one of the foods high in Vitamin E that the body needs to combat free radical formation. I also added *Saffron, which contain anti-oxidants that can help combat stress and depression.

My other key ingredient was **Cardomon, which has also been shown to help lower high blood pressure and help people suffering with high levels of stress or depression.

Mango & Saffron Smoothie

100g Fresh Mango

1 medium banana

150 ml Organic Soya Milk (or milk of your choice)

Half teaspoon Cardmon Powder or Seeds Crushed

1-2 Saffron Threads (grind before adding)

Place all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth.
