SAFFRON - SUPERFOOD BEAUTY 2019
Updated: Jan 24
This month I learned from Refinery 29 that Saffron was called this year’s Superfood Beauty Ingredient. Woohoo!
Further research led me to another news release published in 2019, which stated that the global Saffron market was anticipated to grow due to the therapeutic and cosmetic benefits of Saffron.
As part of my research for Nudge, I already knew that Saffron was a powerful antioxidant for treating dull, sun damaged and dry skin. I also wrote a blog about the mood boosting benefits of Saffron, which you can read about here.
Saffron is grown in Spain, Austria, Italy, Greece, France, Kashmir and *Iran. These cultures are very familiar with the spice, with uses in culinary dishes, cosmetics, medicine and dyeing (*the lifting of sanctions against Iran in 2016 saw a fresh demand for Saffron world-wide).
Due to the high demand and cost of Saffron, it’s common to see poor quality Saffron sold on the market, or Safflower being passed off as Saffron, so an award system was set up called ISO 3632 to grade the purity and quality of the spice.
The great thing is that we don’t have to travel far and wide to find the real thing as Dr Sally Francis grows ISO quality assured, award winning Saffron right here in Norfolk! How awesome is that?!
Many customers and visitors to my booth at Craft and Gift Markets are surprised to hear we grow Saffron in Norfolk, and even more surprised that it’s being used in a cosmetic product. What’s more, I upcycle Saffron petals and create an antioxidant rich facial mask, which adds to the curiosity!
Saffron has been used for centuries as a beautifying ingredient, the most famous being Cleopatra who used Saffron infused milk baths.

In anticipation for new products and fragrances I changed the colour of the Kokum Body Boost Butter from black to pastel yellow. Have a peek here.
Yes, this month is all about the new, but did you know that as from June 2019 it is now illegal for any cosmetic brand to use the term ‘free from’ read more here
Under EU Cosmetic Regulations all products brought to market must be Safety Assessed and be formulated using the EU approved list of ingredients.
When a company claims ‘free from x ingredient’, it suggests that other cosmetic products on the market using ‘x’ ingredient is using something unsafe, therefore denigrating the ingredient and being unfair to competition.
However, not being able to use ‘free from’ claims does make it difficult to let you know about ingredients that you may personally not want to use, such as harsh surfactants. If you have a question about what ingredients I use and don’t use please, please, please feel free to email me.
